‘Back of the Napkin’ Moments

At the heart of Gardner AI Insights lies a story that began in the quiet corners of libraries. As a research librarian and UX designer, my mission was to find innovative ways to make information more accessible, fostering the creation of new knowledge.

This pursuit led me to a Master of Science in Data Science at SMU. I explored the immense potential that lives at the intersection of our vast library collections and machine learning technologies through my coursework. Post-graduation, I ventured into the data science arena, immersing myself in the rapidly advancing world of large-language models and generative AI.

Amid this deluge of change, I felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with the daily developments of new models and AI products that promised to make life easier. As someone trained to be the expert on AI and machine learning, I found it a challenge to locate the signal in all of the frenzy and noise. I could only imagine what it must’ve felt like to anyone outside the field.

Here, I realized the traditional research and information literacy skills I had taught for many years are exactly what we need in this moment in our human history. The format of the information may have changed, but ultimately navigating AI is still an information problem. And so I drew a simple Venn diagram to capture this synergy of information, data, and AI literacies in what would eventually become Gardner AI Insights. Officially established in September 2023, Gardner AI Insights embodies a commitment to demystify AI, marrying traditional information literacy with cutting-edge technology to create an inclusive, ethically-informed AI future for all.
